Sunday Traditions in Bellavista: A Taste of Local Life in the Galápagos

When planning where to stay in the Galápagos Islands, most visitors focus on wildlife, beaches, and unforgettable island adventures. But if you're staying at a hotel in Santa Cruz, Galápagos, don't miss the opportunity to experience one of the island's favorite local traditions—a Sunday lunch in Bellavista.

Located just a 5-minute drive from Puerto Ayora, the small highland community of Bellavista comes alive every Sunday as family-owned restaurants open their doors to serve traditional Ecuadorian and Galápagos cuisine. These restaurants are typically open only on Sundays, making this a unique experience enjoyed by both locals and visitors.

Sharing a leisurely Sunday lunch with families and friends is a wonderful way to experience the authentic culture of Santa Cruz beyond the waterfront.

Explore the Highlands Before Lunch

The journey to Bellavista also provides the perfect opportunity to discover the lush highlands of Santa Cruz Island. The cooler climate, green landscapes, and scenic hiking trails offer a completely different side of the Galápagos than the coastal areas.

On our latest Sunday outing, we visited Cerro Mesa Private Biological Reserve, home to one of the largest volcanic sinkholes in the Galápagos.

The reserve features a well-maintained walking trail leading to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the massive collapsed crater. Along the trail, you'll encounter native vegetation, unique birdlife, and peaceful scenery that showcases the island's volcanic origins.

For adventurous hikers, it's even possible to descend into the sinkhole for an entirely different perspective of this remarkable geological formation.

A Perfect Sunday in Santa Cruz

A visit to Cerro Mesa followed by a traditional Sunday lunch in Bellavista is one of our favorite ways to spend the day—and one we highly recommend to our guests.

It's the perfect combination of:

  • Authentic local culture
  • Beautiful highland scenery
  • Easy hiking
  • Delicious traditional food
  • A chance to experience Santa Cruz like a local

If you're looking for more than just wildlife tours during your visit, this hidden gem offers an unforgettable glimpse into everyday life in the Galápagos.

Whether you're searching for the best hotels in Santa Cruz, Galápagos, or wondering where to stay in the Galápagos Islands, make sure to set aside a Sunday to explore Bellavista and the Santa Cruz Highlands. It's an experience that will leave you with memories far beyond the famous beaches and wildlife.

Staying at Torre Mar Galápagos Boutique Suites? We'd be happy to recommend our favorite Sunday restaurants in Bellavista and help you plan a visit to Cerro Mesa and other hidden gems across Santa Cruz Island. : )
