We are promoting a fund raising campaign for the Galapagos Chess club. The Galapagos chess club is focused on development of children in the community.

Research has shown playing the game of Chess on a regular basis right from the childhood improves learning, thinking, analytical power, the importance of being disciplined in life, and decision-making ability. Chess also helps children learn how to strategize aspects of the game and life. In addition, a child can learn the importance of foresight, and planning. Chess is a valuable educational tool in developing the capacity of young people.  Galapagos needs investment in our youth to develop capable caretakers and leaders for the future.

Sophia at a tournament
Sophia at a tournament

The Galapagos team members are strong players. This year Sophia Lintuma took the Silver at nationals for the girls sub 8 category. She also placed 1st at a regional tournament. She was invited to the South American Youth Chess tournament where she placed 4th in the Blitz play. She will be competing in the World Youth Chess tournament in United Arab Emirates in Dec 2013. The boys team of Teo Poulsom, Danny Espinosa, Lucas Gallardo, and Donovan Garate took the Silver at the Regional tournament in the boys Sub 8 category. Donovan Garate also took the Bronze at the Regional tournament for the boys sub 6 category.

The funds raised for the club are used to aid the team members in traveling to tournaments and for training materials & equipment. The club’s current need is to raise the funds needed to send Sophia and the team’s coach to the UAE for the World Youth tournament. Please donate to this valuable children’s program in the Galapagos islands.
